DESCRIPTION Participants will be introduced to the main aspects of eLearning.

Initially, there will be an overview of the main theories underlying eLlearning and a brief review of the main pedagogical theories and how these influence the actual development of an e-learning System.

The roles and requirements of the '21st century' student, tutors and institutions/e-learning providers will also be investigated.

An overview of the latest/future trends that appear to be applied in the fields of e-learning such as mobile learning (m-learning), Just In time Learning (J.I.L.), e-training - workplace-based training for employees. Additionally, some case studies will be explored and analysed. Select current issues and trends in eLearning will also be explored.

Study-unit Aims

• To provide knowledge of e-learning and the various scenarios where different modes of e-learning are being applied.
• To enable participates to become aware and knowledgeable with some of the current issues and literature in eLearning.
• Invite experts from the ICT industry to illustrate actual systems used by their organization and inform students about practical related issues.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
• Distinguish between the main theories behind e-learning.
• Develop an e-learning strategy within a particular organisation and be a reference for other stakeholders due to the ability of combining the required knowledge from both the pedagogical and system development philosophies.
• Make reflection and self-assessment of their phase of study.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
• Use the theoretical knowledge provided by the main e-learning philosophies to suggest a design for a typical e-learning scenario.
• Demonstrate knowledge/awareness and ability to critically evaluate some of the eLearning issues of the day.
• Evaluate the various development tools and their learning objects, assess their effectiveness vis-a-vis specific e-learning requirements and implement them in real-life scenarios.
