DESCRIPTION The study-unit covers the concepts of Resonance and Sinusoidal oscillation - Review of Resonance and resonant tanks using RLC passive components, Q-Factor, Bandwidth, Piezoelectric crystals and Sinusoidal oscillators, Feedback and stability using control theory, The Barkhaussen criterion, Phase/Gain Margin for sustained Oscillation, Achieving exact marginal stability. Different topologies of Oscillators: Colpitts, Hartley, Phase-Shift, Bubba, Wien-Bridge, Quadrature, Crystal. Oscillator design and performance comparison.

The study-unit also covers Active filters including Advantages/disadvantages over passive filters, Filter Specifications, Linear v.s. Nonlinear filters, Types, Sallen-Key Circuit. High Pass, Low Pass, Band Pass, Band Reject, Chebychev, Butterworth, Bessel Filters.

Study-unit Aims:

This unit introduces the concept of oscillators in microelectronic circuits and the design of filter circuits which are used in telecommunications and signal conditioning.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- describe and mathematically model the principle of resonance;
- explain the operation of various oscillator and filter circuits;
- design oscillator and filter circuits.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- build and test sinusoidal oscillator circuits;
- build and test a basic active filter circuit.
