DESCRIPTION | The Mediterranean Sea and its peoples are testimony to the great cultures that have shaped the political, social, religious, and economic structures of modern western civilization. This study-unit intends to provide an overview of the cultures from a multi-perspective approach. This study-unit is meant to introduce first year students to basic issues of culture in the Mediterranean and thus be able to evaluate our product from a new and fresh perspective. Study-unit Aims: This study-unit will examine Mediterranean society and its culture from a multi-disciplinary perspective in order to answer the question: "What is the Mediterranean?". To provide a background about the evolution of the Mediterranean mind-set and how this presents itself today. To encourage students to build on their established interest in the Mediterranean by developing their sensitivity to different aspects of the cultural diversity of the region, and of the relevance of cultural issues to identity formation - essential aspects which are necessary for operators in the tourism industry. It intends to help students evaluate the changing circumstances of our age and encourage them widen their perspective in their future professional life. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be gain an overview of culture from a multi-perspective approach and introduce Tourism first year students to much needed understanding of basic issues of culture in the Mediterranean. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Gain an analytical understanding of Maltese society from a broad Mediterranean perspective which will help them to appreciate better; - Identify traits and practices that make Mediterranean societies what they are. |
