DESCRIPTION This study-unit is recognised as a best practice by the Memory of the World (MoW)Studies, a working group which promotes the use of the UNESCO Memory of the World register resources in research and teaching. It introduces students to the digital library domain and the basic concepts related to it; outlines societal and technological conditions, and looks at reference models in the domain. Examples from the MoW register, the World Digital Library and Europeana will be used as case studies.

Topics which will be covered include:
1. Applications of new information technologies in the libraries, museums and archives.
2. Digital libraries. Case studies (Memory of the World Register of UNESCO, World Digital Library, Europeana).
3. Digital libraries. Reference models (DLRM, 5S).
4. Digitisation process. Typical workflows.
5. Metadata. Interoperability.
6. Access to digital resources.
7. Users and uses of digital resources. Information behaviour. Personalisation.
8. Quality of digital resources.
9. Digital libraries evaluation.
10. Long-term preservation.
11. Managing technological change.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to provide an introduction to digital libraries integrating technological, user and organisational points of view.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Analyze societal and technological conditions for development and use of digital libraries.
- Understand the processes of digitisation, access and preservation.
- Make comparative analysis of different digital libraries in order to understand what users they are best suited to serve and how they can be improved to cater for different user groups.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Define the components of digital libraries.
- Apply hands-on skills in observing and comparing digital libraries.
- Define basic workflows for digitisation.
- Define the differences between digitisation for access and digitisation for preservation.
