Both traditional and electronic forms of bibliographic control will be covered as regards both their characteristics and mutual advantages and drawbacks.

Study-unit Aims:

- To define bibliographic control to students and its role and importance within a library and research setting.
- To provide the historical background of how bibliographic control evolved from its beginning to date.
- To familiarise students with the different styles used in the compilation of traditional and electronic bibliographies.
- To enable students to differentiate between different types of bibliographic control, according to the type of material to be thus controlled (the various print and electronic types).

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- demonstrate a clear understanding of the concepts of universal bibliographic control, legal deposit and bibliographic centres, by referring to actual examples of them.
- demonstrate familiarity with the development of bibliographic control and its importance and compare past with present methods of achieving good results.
- analyse the usability and effectiveness of bibliographies as research tools and evaluate them in the context of the type of material they are describing, given different forms of print and electronic bibliographies.
- compare the situation regarding current and retrospective bibliographic control of melitensia in relation to the situation outside Malta, particularly within the context of national bibliographic control.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- update an existing bibliographic tool, whether in print or electronic format, through the use of appropriate research methods.
- compile a bibliographic tool and justify its utility in a particular library and/or research setting.
