TITLE Medical Statistics

LEVEL 05 - Postgraduate Modular Diploma or Degree Course

DESCRIPTION This study-unit will supply the students reading for an MSc in public health with the skills to understand the statistics reported in health journal articles and scientific reports and to empower them to be able to plan and carry out their own studies/ audits and have the necessary skills to carry out their own statistical analysis.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to empower students with enough knowledge of statistics to be able to follow and read through most scientific material critically and to carry out their own simple audits and research projects.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Understand statistics reported in most scientific journal articles;
- Appraise the quality of such statistics in the light of the context of the study;
- Appreciate how statistical methods applied cannot be independent of the epidemiological methods applied in the study method.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Translate his/her research needs into an aim and a set of analysable objectives;
- Plan out their own research/audit;
- Carry out their fieldwork and data collection;
- Input their data and conduct basic statistical analysis;
- Interpreting their statistical output keeping their study parameters in perspective.
