DESCRIPTION - Managing needs of special patient populations: older persons, paediatrics, pregnant and lactating mothers
- Responding to Symptoms and self-care therapeutics: presented at the Community Pharmacy: ear disorders, abdominal disorders, perianal and perivulval pruritus, musculoskeletal disorders, skin disorders, foot care
- Eye Care
- Oral and Dental Care
- Travel medicine and first aid
- Wound management
- Community Pharmacy Management: principles of management of a community pharmacy, purchasing and inventory control, financial management
- Pharmaceutical services: Primary care, hospital services and regulatory sciences, digitalisation in pharmacy - Formulary Systems
- Pharmacy Practice Research: The scientific approach, basic principles of research, ethics in research, research design, psychometric evaluation, sampling, report writing; participation at the yearly pharmacy symposium
- Practical experience in a community pharmacy.

Study-Unit Aims:

- To appreciate social and therapeutic factors involved in paediatric and geriatric pharmacy practice
- To examine contemporary health care delivery systems;
- To review principles of pharmacy management and regulatory affairs;
- To develop skills in responding to minor symptoms;
- To provide students with practical experience in a community pharmacy.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- recognize symptoms of minor ailments and provide patient empowerment for self-care therapeutics;
- describe guidelines and standards of practice for the manufacture and distribution of medicines;
- illustrate accounting principles, financial management and investment in pharmacy.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- collect adequate patient data to make informed-decisions;
- conduct systematic review prior to dispensing or recommending non-prescription medicines or medical devices;
- Integrate critical and scientific thinking by applying problem-solving strategies.
