DESCRIPTION Good health is a vital asset. The full benefits of healthy longevity have yet to be shared by all humanity. Older persons are fully entitled to have access to preventive and curative care. This involves disease prevention, health promotion, maintaining independence and delay of disease and disability. This study-unit identifies the common medical conditions in old age, how they present themselves, how they should be managed and what support and clinical care services are required and recommended for frail older persons.

Topics concentrate on diseases of specific organ systems, such as neurological, cardiovascular, respiratory, locomotor, skin, auditory and visual problems.

Participants are familiarised with the range of health services, whether in the community or in general. Similar attention is given to specialised hospitals, nursing homes and long-term institutions targeting the specific health needs of older persons.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit starts with the fact that the level of morbidity increases with age. Although old age is not a sickness, the possibility of disability increases in later life. This is the more so among the 'old old'. In this regard, participants are enabled to differentiate between the various clinical conditions that older persons can suffer from. This study-unit also describes the characteristic medical problems and complications prevalent among older persons. Within the classroom setting, participants will discuss the specific assessments and clinical management techniques in geriatric medicine. At the same time they will be able to evaluate the most appropriate health care services to meet the wide range of clinical conditions.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- distinguish the common and topical medical conditions such as osteoarthritis, parkinsonism, stroke, diabetes, pressure sores, hypertension, hyper/hypothermia, sleep disorders;
- identify and compare the management of a number of specific medical problems in old age;
- appraise the importance of published clinical guidelines and evidence-based practice in geriatric medicine;
- explain ways of auditing the quality of care provided in geriatric settings.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- use approved tools to measure and evaluation the quality of care;
- assess the clinical services that can be made available for the care of older persons;
- develop the required clinical skills;
- analyse and interpret interdisciplinary clinical practice;
- adapt to the team-management system in assessing the health issues of older persons.
