DESCRIPTION This study-unit is a prerequisite to SWP 3611 Practical Elements of Helping Skills and SWP 3311 Practical Placement A. The study-unit covers the social work interview, the role of the social worker when using helping skills, the social worker's attitudes and types of responses, the relationship between counselling and social work, client-centred practice, the developmental model of helping, the various stages and dynamics of practice sessions, and applications to different types of clients.

Objective:

To offer a grounding in basic helping theory for social work practice.
To provide a theoretical understanding of the helping process in social work practice.
