DESCRIPTION This study-unit explores Pre-Raphaelite poetry, with a focus on affinities between literature and art.

The study-unit discusses the literature associated with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood founded in 1848 by Dante Gabriel Rossetti and his circle. It includes a general introduction to Pre-Raphaelite painting with a focus on the thematic and technical similarities and variations which exist between the art and poetry of the Pre-Raphaelites, within a general overview of art and literature in England in the mid-nineteenth century.

Other topics discussed include the founding of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, its beginnings, aims, members and critical reception; John Ruskin; Thematic links between the work of the Pre-Raphaelites, Romantic poetry, and Tennyson; Medievalism in nineteenth-century England; the Nazarene painters.

The poetry of Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Christina Rossetti, and William Morris are set for detailed study.

Guides on further reading will be recommended during the study-unit.
