DESCRIPTION This study-unit will introduce students of Akkadian to a variety of text types in cuneiform writing, transcription, and transliteration. In this way, students will be able to engage directly with a variety of cuneiform primary sources such as historical texts, mythological narratives, imperial administrative documents, legal texts, omens, divinatory writings, and literary compositions.

Study-Unit Aims:

The aim of this study-unit is to improve the students' knowledge of cuneiform cultures in general and of the Akkadian language in particular. This will be done using a variety of textual genres from the first millennium BCE. Students will engage with and read closely different text types as well as learn the most appropriate way of using these sources to construct knowledge about cuneiform cultures.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- identify high frequency occurrence cuneiform signs in context;
- parse intermediate to advanced Akkadian grammar;
- analyse a variety of textual genres from both philological and critical perspectives;
- identify more complex signs and how to interpret them.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- read and interpret Akkadian primary sources in transcription, transliteration, and in cuneiform;
- translate edited texts from Akkadian to English;
- explain the context of production, audience, and message of the studied texts;
- answer questions related to the content of the texts;
- discuss intermediate to advanced level Akkadian grammar and philology through a variety of textual compositions.
