DESCRIPTION This is a study-unit on the basics of the art of painting. The emphasis will be on painting with acrylics, oil on canvas, watercolour and other media. The study-unit will focus on still-life and landscape on location. The study-unit will involve studio and on-site practice. Various techniques will be addressed.

Students have to get their own materials.

ART2410 is part of ART2400.

Study-Unit Aims:

The aim of this study-unit is to introduce students to the craft and practice of painting. Students will study theoretical approaches to understanding the practical side of the subject. Students will become familiar with diverse painting media and techniques.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Gain mastery in methods of observation and recording skills
- Handle a wide variety of painting media and supports
- Reflect on personal ideas and respond creatively to develop a painting project
- Contextualise their own practice within current understandings of what constitutes the act of painting

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Observe and record skills from primary sources that include both object and landscape studies
- Express a critical insight in the application of colour as an expression of mood and emotion
- Demonstrate a better understanding of contemporary artistic practices including the expansion of 'painting' into other forms that move beyond the constraints of the picture frame
- Develop research skills through practice-based methods and experimentation techniques
