| DESCRIPTION | This practice-based study-unit addresses the basics of painting and mark-making techniques. The study-unit will involve studio and on-site practice and students will engage with a variety of painting media, supports and forms. Students have to get their own materials. Study-Unit Aims: The aim of this study-unit is to introduce students to the craft, practice and theory of painting. Students will support their practical explorations through a thorough engagement with modern and contemporary artistic practices. Students will become familiar with a diversity of media and techniques. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - develop an analytical approach to observation skills and their application in painting projects; - critically engage with the various painting techniques; - develop a reflexive methodology that is specific to painting-based research-projects. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - prepare different supports for painting; - learn grounding and priming techniques that are apt for developing a personal project; - critically evaluate their work from direct observation as well as work from secondary sources; - engage with theoretical discourses on how mark-making and painting methods intersect.
