DESCRIPTION The study-unit seeks to discuss the tools and methodology of fine arts research and practice. The study-unit is primarily aimed for M.A. candidates in Fine Arts and will be devised to follow the candidates’ specific research and practice for their theses.

The topics for discussion are:

- Research planning and practice;
- Originality;
- Bibliographic collection and control;
- Collecting research;
- Producing a researched body of work;
- Contextualising one's artwork theoretically;
- Sources and references;
- Academic writing.

A cycle of seminars with active student participation will be held to discuss research in progress.

Study-unit Aims:

- To introduce the methodologies involved in fine arts research and practice of the research programme, in relation to art historical research;
- To provide students with the different skills required and methodologies to write the postgraduate dissertation connected with their final project;
- To cultivate a critical understanding of the research process leading to the writing of the postgraduate dissertation;
- To help students identify and critically analyze the interconnection between the different stages in their research and writing processes, as linked with the development of their practical project;
- To encourage the critical assessment of a candidate's own work within the context of contemporary art both locally and abroad;
- To introduce and achieve a wide understanding of the exploration of a wide range of different research methods related to the theoretical and practice side of the Fine Arts.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Define the main objectives of their research project and accompanying dissertation;
- Choose the appropriate methodology for fine arts research and data collection;
- Describe the main approaches taken to develop their research project;
- Distinguish the different stages in the practical, research and writing processes;
- Write and present their work according to rigorous academic criteria.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Have bibliographic control over their subject;
- Write a comprehensive literature review;
- Plan the stages of research according to a particular schedule;
- Undertake postgraduate research in different contexts by using a variety of methodology;
- Assess critically the main sources of their research.
