| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit will introduce students to basic skills in ceramic modelling. Students will be able to develop art project/s of various types associated with artistic pottery, tableware, decorative tiles, or sculpture figurines. The level of this study unit is MQF level 3. Students will learn about basic ceramic techniques such as Pinching, Slab Construction, Coil Construction and Hand Building. In the process of their artistic course work, they will explore and experiment with properties of clay such as hardness, resistance, and drying stages. As a final stage of their artistic practice, students will fire their clay artwork/s and learn about the process of firing. Study-Unit Aims: This study-unit aims: - to provide students with basic modelling skills in ceramics; - to introduce students to ceramic art history; - to guide students to explore the ways in which artistic concepts can be expressed in clay; - to assist students to reflect upon the artmaking process and their final product/s. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - gain theoretical knowledge on ceramic art history; - use the right terminology to distinguish and describe the types and properties of clay used in ceramics; - use their knowledge on the subject to develop and discuss artistic concepts and how they can translate into ceramic art. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - design and create a series of ceramic artworks; - exercise and improve on their modelling skills; - develop basic competences in ceramic art through experimentation and design work; - work collaboratively with other students in the development of creative ideas.
