DESCRIPTION During this study-unit, participants will mainly develop their own vocal technique and choral performance skills to be able to teach and guide their prospective students. The study-unit covers singing at all ages, including knowledge on how to deal with changing adolescent voices. The participants will also use tuned and un-tuned percussion and body percussion, as well as class instruments such as the recorder, to develop more performance opportunities and skills for their students.

Study-Unit Aims:

The study-unit aims to empower music teachers with the methodology and skills to teach music performance in the classroom. These skills may be used to improve children’s performance skills especially in choral singing, but also in the playing of tuned and un-tuned percussion as well as in the playing of classroom instruments such as the recorder.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- describe the overall skills and methods requested for the improvement of performance skills in children
- define the importance of performance in the context of a general music programme.
- discuss vocal technique and how to apply this in the classroom.
- establish an effective approach to a singing choral session.
- classify a selected vocal repertoire that is age and level appropriate.
- review vocal and choral technique in the context of a general music programme.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- administer class percussion performance activities.
- perform on the recorder.
- conduct performance and interpretation of music from different periods of music.
- interpret and practise performance in a way that is appropriate to the style and purpose of the music
- select adequate repertoire for successful performance development and concert building.
