DESCRIPTION This study-unit will provide students with knowledge of current theories and debates regarding dance pedagogy. The primary focus will be on investigating and developing styles of teaching and learning, and will include aspects such as movement analysis, and somatic approaches to teaching dance. The unit will take into account multiple frameworks and scenarios for teaching dance including both studio based and dance as integrated into classroom settings.

Study-unit Aims:

- To provide a historical and theoretical foundation of dance and education in order to allow the student to develop knowledge and understanding of dance pedagogy.
- To expose students to multiple perspectives on teaching and learning dance and movement in order to begin to broaden their understanding of dance as an educational endeavour at both the primary and secondary levels.
- To examine varieties of techniques for teaching various forms of dance including codified, non-codified, and cultural dance forms.
- To establish an understanding of pedagogical frameworks and methodologies.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Recognise, analyse, and critically engage with current pedagogical theories of dance and education.
- Develop and apply methods of how to use dance and movement in order to facilitate creative and critical learning.
- Engage with the historical and pedagogical development of dance and education.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Critically engage with diverse theoretical and historical approaches to dance pedagogy.
- Comprehend and apply basic terminology related to dance teaching and pedagogy.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the development of critical and creative thinking skills through the use dance and movement.
