DESCRIPTION The study-unit focuses on providing the student with a 'tool box' of practical strategies for developing a successful environment for the practice of dance education. It is designed to allow for in-depth discussions on topics related to creating an effective teaching environment and will draw upon current literature, case studies, and opportunities for observation.

The second section of the unit will build upon the information covered in the first term, and topics to be explored include ethical considerations, health and safety concerns, cross-disciplinary curriculum, assessment and evaluation, and other related aspects needed to build a successful dance and movement teaching practice and learning environment.

Study-unit Aims:

- To provide and expose students to tools for considering areas related to ethics both in and out of the teaching environment.
- To discuss issues of health and safety, and their importance within multiple types of dance spaces and scenarios.
- To explore a variety of methods for developing cross-disciplinary dance based curriculum.
- To present options and opportunities for the development of problem solving and organisational skills tailored to the needs of a dance and educational setting.
- To invetigate and address potential problems related to teaching dance, and develop a set of skills in which to creatively and effectively deal with them.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Formulate and comprehend a working knowledge of ethics and ethical considerations related to the teaching of dance.
- Recognise and be able to demonstrate the importance of health and safety when teaching dance, and how to create a safe learning environment.
- Develop strategies for organising and problem solving within educational dance-based situations.
- Demonstrate an awareness of possibilities and approaches for integrating dance and movement with other curricular subjects.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge of current literature related to issues teaching dance.
- Have clear strategies for addressing ethical situations related to dance teaching.
- Create and plan procedures to ensure a safe and healthy environment exists within their teaching practice.
- Propose and prepare cross curricular lesson plans that are inclusive of dance and areas of general educational subjects
