DESCRIPTION This study-unit seeks to develop workshop skills and dance practice in relation to the process of working with individuals from a variety of abilities, backgrounds, and community settings. It intends to broaden the students' knowledge on how to select particular dance and teaching content, methods of delivery and dance outcomes, which are pertinent to specific learning contexts.

It will draw attention to a variety of purposes behind different artistic practices such as dance therapy, as well as developing a greater awareness of the representation of disability in dance, from both social and political perspectives. It will also implement principles of inclusiveness in education, whilst asserting participants' needs and strengths.

Study-unit Aims:

The study-unit aims to develop students' understanding of the influence of community dance as a form of individual expression, as well as a social voice. It will provide the students with a basic knowledge of, and appreciation for the potential of dance in the development of specific communitues of people such as the elderly, and those who are living with physical and/or developmental disabilites.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Identify the principles of community dance in its theory and practice.
- Engage with the field and practice of disability arts.
- Identify and utilise the potential benefits of dance and community work.
- Develop choreographic and workshop skills in relation to specific contexts related to dance and community practice.
- Demonstrate an awareness of the role of the dance animatour/community dance worker.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Lead workshops in a community context and apply good communication skills.
- Engage in online and face to face discussions on matters related to disability arts.
- Establish goals for artistic practice within particular communities and fulfill them through the creation of pedagogical practice.
- Explore the use of mixed methods and other creative practices and their use with workshop development.
