DESCRIPTION This study-unit introduces students to practical methods of designing curricula for both primary and secondary level classes. Students learn how to engage learners in artistic tasks that lead to appropriate learning outcomes and how to develop art classroom management strategies. They are also introduced to principles of child development in relation to art and develop hands-on lesson plans and schemes of work for their practicum.

Study-Unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to:
- Introduce students to child development stages in relation to art at primary and secondary levels;
- Provide students with the opportunity to debate the nature of learning in the arts and how to articulate practical methods of implementing teaching strategies that lead to effective learning;
- Assist students to develop curricula, lessons and assessment strategies that can be implemented during teaching practicum;
- Engage prospective teachers in creative tasks that supplement educational and theoretical discussions;
- Assist students in demonstrating and putting into practice different approaches to art coursework and portfolios.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- identify, compare and apply different modes of assessment in art education;
- apply various instructional learner-centred strategies that make use of a range of material and digital media in the visual arts, at primary and secondary levels;
- evaluate his/her own practices and relationships between teaching methods and broader educational philosophies;
- identify different stages of child development in relation to artistic skills and cognitive development;
- identify methods of engaging learners in a range of thinking processes, critical applications and interdisciplinary activities that involve the visual arts.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- design a curriculum that is appropriate to specific age-groups and educational contexts;
- plan lessons and schemes of work that show evidence of a range of artistic media, teaching methods, use of technologies and references to artists and visual cultures;
- adapt strategies that are appropriate for special contexts or needs;
- display practical skills in the application of tools, techniques and creative tasks implemented in the classroom;
- organise creative work and research in a portfolio.
