Study-Unit Description

CODE ACR5006

TITLE Sustainable Practices in Contemporary Artistic Research and Pedagogy

UM LEVEL 05 - Postgraduate Modular Diploma or Degree Course

MQF LEVEL 7

ECTS CREDITS 5

DEPARTMENT Arts, Open Communities and Adult Education

DESCRIPTION The study-unit links research on education for sustainable development with contemporary artistic practices in art education. It examines ways of integrating the use of both traditional and new media at different levels of the educational system, thus directly linking students' own studio inquiry to pedagogies employed in class. It also introduces arts-based approaches to educational research in order to highlight the interconnected nature of research and art making, with a specific emphasis on research that studies issues of sustainability and non-anthropocentric approaches to art education. Students will study innovative approaches to integrating scientific knowledge, research and pedagogy into the teaching and learning of art in order to develop interdisciplinary curricula that enrich the visual arts through other disciplines.

Study-Unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to:

- Introduce students to theories of arts-based educational research (ABER), A/r/tography, and Arts-based Action Research (ABAR), with a focus on sustainable practices;
- Analyse specific readings and cases of arts-based educational research;
- Prepare students for the use of arts-based research methods in their own dissertation;
- Assist students in studying the use of different media used in contemporary artistic practices in primary and secondary school settings, and understanding linkages between principles of sustainability and different media used in art.
- Engage students with a visual arts background in creative interpretations of scientific research and pedagogy.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- identify and describe different arts-based forms of research that can be employed in education;
- identify issues related to sustainable development (climate change, recycling, poverty, urban overdevelopment, etc.) that can be integrated in artistic research;
- describe and discuss specific media and practices and their relationship with holistic approaches to artistic practice in educational contexts;
- examine and critique his/her own role as an 'artist' and ‘artivist’ in educational and research settings.
- apply creative modes of inquiry to interdisciplinary curricula bridging art and science.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- display critical reading, writing and research skills, with a special emphasis on arts-based research, sustainable development and the integration of science in artistic activities;
- describe a specific case of arts-based educational research that focuses on issues of sustainability and adapt it to a local scenario in a presentation;
- design practical activities for specific educational settings and age-groups that employ different media and principles of sustainability in art education.
