| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit gives credit to the flying training obtained in the course of successfully completing an EASA/FAA-approved Private Pilot's Licence (PPL) or equivalent. Credit is given for the following exercises and skills: - Carrying out pre-flight planning and pre-flight checks; - General aircraft handling on the ground and in the air; - Performing take-offs and landings; - Handling emergencies, including forced landings; - Stall recovery and spin avoidance; - Solo flight; - VFR Cross-country flying (Navigation); - Radio navigation; - Communicating with Air Traffic Control via radio (radio telephony). Study-unit Aims: - To provide students with the basic piloting skills to a level of EASA/FAA-approved Private Pilot's Licence (PPL) or equivalent. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Describe the methods, tools and techniques used to plan a flight; - Describe the forces acting on a single engine aircraft in different phases of flight and when performing different manoeuvers; - Describe how to identify anomalous flight conditions (such as a stall) and how to recover from them; - Explain the methods and techniques used to navigate cross country under VFR; - Explain the procedures used for different emergencies on a single engine aircraft, such as an engine failure; - Describe the procedures and phraseology used to communicate with Air Traffic Control. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Plan a complete flight and conduct pre-flight checks; - Safely fly a single engine aircraft alone (solo) under VFR; - Perform stall recovery; - Successfully navigate cross country; - Successfully handle emergencies, such as a forced landing; - Proficiently communicate with Air Traffic Control via radio. |
