DESCRIPTION This course is a continuation of the study of communication and communication theory, with an emphasis on overcoming communication apprehension, developing listening skills, masteringoral performance and writing about communication. Individual sections may focus on public speaking, group discussion, oral interpretation, or interpersonal communication.

Study-unit Aims:

This course is designed to help students develop and demonstrate effective communication skills based upon current research and discussion, learning that communication is a process. They will learn to measure communication effectiveness by matching speaker intentions with listener understanding. Students will present speeches to inform, narrate, persuade and will lead or participate in group discussions or forums, and also learn to employ logical organizational strategies, critical thinking, and effective delivery techniques.

Learning Outcomes:
Upon course completion, students will be able to:

1. Demonstrate increased abilities, confidence and oral communication skills in public, and a variety of career contexts;
2. Demonstrate the ability to conduct and report research in accordance with professional standards;
3. Demonstrate the ability to speak to multiple audiences for multiple purposes;
4. Demonstrate competency and confidence in informative and persuasive speaking;
5. Lead and participate in a balanced problem-solving or fact-finding group presentation, and in this context, respond to comments and questions while maintaining objectivity;
6. Understand and employ task and maintenance functions to achieve group cohesiveness, recording and analyzing group dynamics through journal entries, reports, or essays;
7. Practice informative, persuasive, and empathetic listening, and communicate understanding through journal entries, reports, or essays. (PO 3, 4, 9);
8. Use technology to organize and communicate ideas through visual presentations and media;
9. Demonstrate presentational abilities, with emphasis on the following:
a. Use an attention-getter opening and concluding clincher;
b. Verbalize a clear thesis and preview main points;
c. Use appropriate organizational strategies and effective transitions;
d. Use visual aids to help clarify key points, make them interesting, and establish authority;
e. Maintain eye contact with audience, demonstrating both holds and range;
f. Maintain clear articulation, vocal variety and expressiveness, as well as offering effective pauses without using disfluencies;
g. Communicate confidence and control over content and delivery;
h. Offer informed, reasoned responses to questions from the audience.
