| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit gives credit to the flying training obtained in the course of successfully completing an EASA/FAA-approved Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) with instrument and night ratings, or equivalent. Credit is given for the following exercises and skills: - Night flying on instruments cross-country; - Handling emergencies at night, including recovery from unusual attitudes; - Cross-country flying in multi-engined aircraft; - Handling asymmetric flight in multi-engined aircraft (all flight phases); - IFR navigation (using VOR, DME, NDB); - Flying patterns under IFR; - Unusual attitude recovery under IFR; - Instrument Landing (ILS). Study-Unit Aims: - To provide students with advanced piloting skills to a level of FAA/EASA-approved night rating, instrument rating, multi-engine rating, and commercial pilot's licence (CPL). Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Describe the forces acting on a multi-engine aircraft at different phases of flight and when performing different manoeuvers; - Explain the methods and techniques used to navigate and fly using instruments only (under IFR); - Describe the procedures used to handle different emergencies, such as a single engine failure (on a multi-engine aircraft); - Describe special procedures and considerations for flying at night. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Safely operate an aircraft with more than one engine without the assistance of an instructor or other certified pilot; - Safely fly a single- or multi-engine aircraft under Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) without the assistance of an instructor or other certified pilot; - Safely navigate and fly using instruments only (IFR, precision and non-precision approaches); - Successfully handle emergencies such as recovery from unusual aircraft attitudes using instruments alone and single engine failure on multi-engined aircraft; - Safely operate an aircraft at night. |
