DESCRIPTION This course will introduce the student to the field of psychology, and is a survey of the bio-psychosocial continuum and the intra-psychic, interpersonal, and organizational factors affecting human behavior. A primary feature of the course is its focus on the scientific method as the route to psychological knowledge. Students examine the rationalist, empiricist and experimental foundations of the scientific method and how these foundations can be critiqued. Topics include sensation, perception, learning, motivation, emotion, memory, personality, psychopathology, physiological psychology and social processes. Emphasis is placed on the application of the basic principles of psychology to engineering, aviation, public policy and business.

Study-unit Aims:

This course is designed to provide the student with a knowledge and understanding of basic principles in psychology and their applications to human behavior. This course will help the student develop an understanding of the terminology used; develop an appreciation of the historical growth; develop an understanding of the basic theories applicable to the field of psychology; and develop an ability to apply the basic theories of psychology to practical life situations.

Learning Outcomes:
Upon course completion, students will be able to:

1. Demonstrate an understanding of the major disciplines in the field of psychology;
2. Define psychology, describe its goals and methods, and distinguish it from other sciences which study human behavior;
3. Describe techniques and tools used to assess human behavior;
4. Describe five major perspectives of psychology;
5. Describe brain function and how it affects behavior;
6. Demonstrate an understanding of how human behaviors affect daily life, particularly in the aerospace and aviation domains;
7. Gain insight into own behavior;
8. Discuss the principles of perceptual organization;
9. Describe the stages of sleep and understand dreaming;
10. Describe the functions of the memory systems;
11. Identify the characteristics of intelligence as described by both layman and psychologists;
12. Learn ways to maximize human performance;
13. Describe the effects of stress (psychological and physiological);
14. Summarize the important physiological and psychological changes that occur during adolescence;
15. Define personality and distinguish among the major theoretical orientations;
16. Describe the basic theories and principles of motivation and emotion;
17. Define social psychology. Explain how social influences affect our attitudes, behavior, and emotions;
18. Develop competence in reading, interpreting and critiquing literature within the specialty area and communicate such information in written form and verbal presentation.
