DESCRIPTION | Objectives: To familiarize the students with the modern techniques used in micro-propagation of plants and other laboratory methods, particularly those concerning reproduction of plants and animals Contents: Review of molecular biology, DNA and RNA, principles of genetics, DNA mapping, RFLP, PCR and related methods; Review of cell biology, eukoryotic plant cell, structure and function of major organelles; review of protein chemistry, translation, methods of analysis; micropropagation, methods, uses and advantages; plant/animal cell culture; transgenic plants, pesticides, resistance, nitrogen fixation; biochemical process engineering, bioreactors (fermentors), development of amino acids as food enhancers. Animal and Plant Breeding Systems: Review of reproductive processes in animals (domestic/farm) and plants; practical applications of modern breeding techniques; maintenance of maximum reproductive efficiency; Reproduction manipulation; Statistical tools as applied to breeding systems Reading List: - Ratledge, Basic Biotechnology; Borem et al, Understanding Biotechnology |
