| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit aims to familiarize students with the theory and practice of the teaching of the English language including a brief overview of the methods and approaches that have been proposed over the years. Fundamental aspects of language teaching, with particular emphasis on the four language skills, form the major part of this unit. The approach favoured is the Communicative Approach to language teaching, which stresses the importance of meaning and relevance in learning a language. Students will gain an understanding of various strategies for teaching English language skills to secondary school students including the ability to plan a series of lessons and to select material and tasks for the teaching of reading, listening, speaking and writing. Students will be involved in a variety of tasks that consist of practical activities arising from theory, intended to encourage reflection and application.
