DESCRIPTION This study-unit focuses on different anthropological perspectives on sex, gender, and sexuality in different social and cultural contexts. Anthropological theoretical developments will be discussed by considering classic and contemporary ethnographies on gender and sexualities and feminist anthropological perspectives.

Study-Unit Aims::

- To discuss the work and contribution of key figures in the history of anthropology about gender and sexuality.
- To highlight the intersectional relationships between gender, sex, sexuality, and other aspects of a person's identity.
- To present key anthropological theories and concepts related to the notions of gender and sexuality.
- To examine gender and sexuality across cultures by considering political, social, and economic factors.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Explain anthropological concepts and theories about gender and sexuality
- Discuss the social construction of gender and sexuality, and the historical variability of such concepts.
- Describe how gender and sexuality vary cross-culturally.

2. Skills (including transferable [generic] skills): By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Prepare and deliver a presentation.
- Write an assignment with an analytically strong argument.
- Analyse contemporary social issues from an anthropological perspective.
- Reflect on gender diversity from a cross-cultural perspective.
