DESCRIPTION This unit is aimed at familiarizing students to the vast field of medical anthropology, by discussing the main theoretical approaches, research methods and key concepts in the field.

The first part of the study-unit provides an overview on how individual experiences of health and illness are produced and understood, and the socio-cultural factors that shape approaches and understanding of sickness, healing practices and health systems.

The second part of the unit focuses on notions of the body, identity, power, control and ethics, through the discussion of biomedical technologies and interventions, and selected ethnographic examples.

Study-unit Aims:

- To introduce the core concepts and terminology in medical anthropology;
- To raise awareness on important issues related to health and wellbeing;
- To highlight the role of culture and societies in shaping and constructing notions and understandings of health and illness;
- To explore the relationship of health and illness to the body, power and identity.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Discuss the major theoretical perspectives and key concepts in the field of medical anthropology;
- Explain how health and illness are perceived in different cultures;
- Critically reflect on biomedical practices and approaches;
- Identify how cultural values, meanings and practices are linked to health care.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Think critically and engage in analytic discussions;
- Relate academic knowledge to contemporary issues;
- Write an assignment with an analytically strong argument.
