| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit introduces students to the linguistic features of Maghrebi dialects, providing a historical overview of their development in the region. Students will gain an understanding of the distinctive linguistic landscape through exploration of phonological, lexical, morphological, and syntactic aspects of Maghrebi Arabic. In addition to the shared linguistic features of Maghrebi dialects, the study-unit also focuses on practical knowledge, offering a detailed examination of one of the Maghrebi dialects (Moroccan, Algerian, Tunisian, or Libyan). Emphasis is placed on recognising and utilising specific linguistic traits, vocabulary, and regional variations in communication. Through practical exercises and conversational examples, students will develop basic competencies in interacting with Maghrebi Arabic speakers. The study-unit is aimed at complete beginners and is designed to enable learners to communicate in spoken Maghrebi Arabic within a limited range of everyday situations. While knowledge of the Arabic script is not required, students are expected to be familiar with a Semitic language or Maltese. Study-Unit Aims: - To provide students with an introduction to the linguistic features of Maghrebi dialects, including their historical development and regional variations. - To examine the phonological, lexical, morphological, and syntactic aspects of Maghrebi Arabic, enabling students to understand the distinctive linguistic landscape of the region. - To offer practical knowledge by delving into one specific Maghrebi dialect, emphasising linguistic traits, vocabulary, and regional variations relevant to everyday communication. - To enable students to develop basic competencies in interacting with speakers of Maghrebi Arabic through practical exercises and conversational examples, fostering confidence in using the language in real-life situations. - To cater to complete beginners who may have no prior exposure to Maghrebi Arabic, ensuring that the study-unit is accessible and engaging for learners at the introductory level. - To equip students with the necessary skills to communicate effectively in spoken Maghrebi Arabic within a limited range of everyday situations, emphasizing functional language use and practical communication strategies. - To lay the groundwork for further exploration or study of Maghrebi Arabic, empowering students to continue their language learning journey beyond the scope of the study-unit. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Distinguish the linguistic features of Maghrebi Arabic. - Outline the main features of Moroccan, Algerian, Tunisian, and Libyan Arabic. - Describe the historical, cultural and linguistic context of Maghrebi Arabic. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Transcribe Arabic dialects. - Describe the main scholarship in Maghrebi dialects. - Use cognitive strategies to independently understand complex texts and expressions in Maghrebi Arabic.
