DESCRIPTION This course provides extensive practice in comprehending contemporary Arabic writings, including print and nonprint materials. The course trains students both in the idiom of the news media and contemporary literature, but also in the broader media output, including cultural materials. Apart from exposing students to written texts, this study-unit consolidates the linguistic elements covered in the language study-units. Moreover, the study-unit offers insights into a better understanding of contemporary Arab world issues.

Study-unit Aims:

1. To introduce students to contemporary Arabic writings;
2. To train students to read and translate unvocalised contemporary writings;
3. To consolidate Arabic listening and reading competences;
4. To familiarize students with contemporary Arabic writings in the original language.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will:

1. become familiar, in general terms, with the themes and techniques characterizing modern and contemporary Arabic writings, and will have been introduced to some major Arabic critical works;
2. be able to read, comprehend and translate contemporary Arabic texts.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. read, translate and appreciate contemporary writings;
2. strengthen his/her Arabic grammar;
3. distinguish between different literary genres;
4. summarize orally and in writing the excerpts covered;
5. analyse various philological aspects relating to such texts;
6. apply the language skills learned in this study-unit to other study-units related to the Arabic language.
