TITLE Sources for Ancient Art and Archaeology

UM LEVEL 02 - Years 2, 3 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 5

ECTS CREDITS 6

DEPARTMENT Classics and Archaeology

DESCRIPTION Selected texts (extracts) from Classical literature (in particular Pliny’s Natural History and Vitruvius’ On Architecture) will be read in the original language/s and commented. The bias will be on Latin texts but, if all students taking up the unit possess a reasonable knowledge of Greek, selections from Greek texts (such as Pausanias, Description of Greece) will also be included.

Students will be given a list of passages at the beginning of the unit. They will be required to prepare the translation of a selection of passages before each lecture session. The passages will be read in class with a commentary on their historical and art historical background. For this purpose students will be expected to read further on the historical/art historical background of the passages.

Study-unit Aims

1. This unit is meant to enhance the students’ wider knowledge of the Classical World by further reading from the original literary sources on art and architecture.
2. To consolidate their proficiency in Latin and/or Greek by further reading.
3. It aims at training students to discover what ancient writers wrote about ancient works of architecture and art without having to rely on translations.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. Show a deeper understanding of artistic and architectural achievements of the times reflected in the selected passages;
2. Correlate the statements made in the selected passages with the surviving works of art.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
