Study-Unit Description

CODE ARC2125

TITLE Monitored Fieldwork

UM LEVEL 02 - Years 2, 3 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 5

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Classics and Archaeology

DESCRIPTION Fieldwork is fundamental to Archaeology as it is the primary means of data discovery and recovery. Understanding the principles, methodologies and practices of field archaeology is central to the subject. The study-unit consists of monitored active participation in a field project (normally research excavation or field survey) followed by a written report. The emphasis is on gaining competence in the broad range of techniques involved in fieldwork practice.
Since the study-unit is intensive and heavily fieldwork-based, it cannot be offered when the university is in session as it would interfere with other academic activities, and it is therefore offered during the summer recess (in late June/July or September before Semester 1 of Year 2 and 3 of B.A. (Hons) in Archaeology and B.A. in Archaeology with another area).
Students have to follow 2 weeks of fieldwork. The grading will be based on the performance during the fieldwork and the completion of a written report.

Study-unit Aims

The study-unit aims are to:

- give students practical training in the skills required for the practice of field archaeology;
- understand the interplay between theory and method in Archaeology by involving students directly in the recovery and basic analysis of primary material data;
- develop skills that have extensive professional applications (e.g. group work, independence, time management, planning and recording, health and safety).

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- gain experience in a range of excavation and practical study techniques;
- solve problems of conflicting field methods and data recovery;
- achieve a basic level of competence in core archaeological fieldwork skills, including identification of units of stratification, taking levels, excavation, archiving field data;
- appreciate the importance of safety procedures in the field.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- be precise and cautious in the assessment of evidence, and to understand through practice what archaeological data can and cannot tell us;
- with guidance, undertake tasks independently;
- work as part of a team.
