| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit delves into the period when the Maltese islands were part of the Roman Empire, from the late third century BC until their integration into the Byzantine Empire in AD 535. Its primary goal is to foster an understanding of this period through an examination of available historical and material culture evidence, including literary texts, inscriptions, and archaeological findings. The study-unit is organised by key themes, exploring aspects such as Malta's ancient economy, its diverse landscapes – rural, urban, funerary, and religious – and how ancient writings and historical accounts have influenced our comprehension of the Roman impact and enduring heritage on the islands. Study-Unit Aims: - To provide students with an understanding of life in ancient Malta throughout the Roman period; - To examine the various sources of evidence available for studying the Roman period in the Maltese Islands. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Recognise how the present body of knowledge for the period was generated, interpreted and achieved; - Be familiar with how key events and cultural developments unfolded and affected the Maltese social and physical landscape during the Roman period. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Recognize and Interpret the available literary and epigraphic sources that shed light on Roman Malta; - Recognize and Interpret the available archaeological evidence that inform us about life in Roman-period Malta; - Identify, examine and interpret how different sources of evidence are used to complement each other and support an argument about the past; - Recall key sources of evidence used to understand and explain specific topics in Roman period Malta.
