DESCRIPTION This study-unit is a placement designed to help Artificial Intelligence students learn through supervised project experience, consolidating their knowledge and skills by conducting a work placement.

Students will spend a number of hours per week at an approved ICT company or research institute where they will be given assessable tasks that will provide them with the opportunity to apply artificial intelligence techniques and skills from prior learning. This will also furnish the students with first-hand experience of how these techniques and skills can support software design and development within the practices and constraints of a real-world ICT work environment.

Study-Unit Aims:

This study-unit addresses two specific student demographics:

- students without industry experience; and
- students coming from industry.

The prior (i) are provided with:

- exposure to a practical, real-world industrial and business environment;
- familiarisation with the opportunities that exist for careers in ICT;
- development of contacts which might be useful for a career in ICT;
- enhancement of employability opportunities;
- participation in the day-to-day running and operation of a company.

The latter (ii) receive academic merit for their contributions within their respective places of employment.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- apply problem-solving skills and the knowledge of Artificial Intelligence to solve real-world and more applicative problems;
- design, correctly implement and document solutions to Artificial Intelligence problems.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- develop a willingness to face practical solutions to work-related problems;
- develop a capacity to undertake duties required for employment;
- evaluate and report upon the requirements and challenges of a professional career.

No texts are preset for this course; readings will be selected on a case-by-case basis, depending on the nature of the placement. Each individual placement plan will be updated to reflect the chosen texts.
