TITLE Introduction to Painting: Practical Sessions

LEVEL 01 - Year 1 in Modular Undergraduate Course

DESCRIPTION This study-unit introduces students to a variety of techniques using different media through studio-based practice. The study-unit will be dealing with skills related to basic painting techniques such as colour, composition, and development of concepts in two-dimensions. The lectures will also focus on the basic preparation of the canvas and board, and students will be getting hands-on experience.

Experience gained through these lectures will make them able to work on the production of a series of paintings based on personal research.

Study-unit Aims:

The aims of study-unit are to study composition and colour through practice, to experiment with a number of painting techniques, emphasizing on the application of paint, mark and brushwork. Students are also involved in the preparation of canvas and board, and to two-dimensional projects.

The study-unit also aims to make students more familiar with other artists' work through research, as a reference to one's development of skills. A number of given starting points during the lecture will also allow students to develop their artistic ideas better.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

a. demonstrate skills in developing artistic ideas, through a process of idea;
b. understand the generation, selection, experimentation with media and reference to other artists work.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

a. demonstrate skills in composition and painting techniques to communicate visual ideas in a two dimensional medium;
b. demonstrate skills in the application of colour based on theories discussed during workshops;
c. learn how to prepare canvas and board as support for two-dimensional media and be able to evaluate the quality of the prepared surface as effective support for the paintings.
