DESCRIPTION This study-unit aims to discuss the main periods and styles making up the High and Late Western Middle Ages, from Romanesque in the 10th century, to Gothic which stretches up well into the 15th. Lectures will deal with the different periods and how they manifested themselves into different forms, from monumental architecture to illuminated manuscripts. The Western medieval historical context will feature prominently and works of art will be discussed with this context well in mind.

Study-Unit Aims:

The aims of this Unit is to carry out a survey study of the major artistic achievements which happened throughout the High and Late Western Middle-Ages, from the Romanesque period to the great Gothic Cathedrals of France, England and beyond. During lectures, the process of continuity and change, which is very much at the heart of this story, will be analyzed. Works of art and architecture will be discussed from the different standpoints of audience, functions and cross-cultural contexts.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Identify the different periods and styles that form the Western Middle Ages;
- Discuss these periods and styles within their rightful historical contexts;
- Argue about the processes of continuity and change that are very much at the heart of the Western Medieval Aesthetics.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Depict the evolution of Western Medieval Art within the wider perspective of the historical and social contexts of the age;
- Write about and discuss the main styles and periods in a learned and confident manner;
- Understand and describe Western Medieval Art within the wider contexts of Western art in general and beyond.
