DESCRIPTION | This study-unit introduces students to contemporary theories and manifestos of architecture, in a contemporary historical context. Students are invited to read and discuss architectural thinking and manifestos, post Second World War. Case studies are used to illustrate the development of ideas. Study-unit Aims: The study-unit is aimed at introducing students, particularly those interested in reading for a post-graduate degree in Architectural Design, or History and Theory of Architecture, to the history and theories of architecture, post Second World War. Students are introduced to the main literature, and to analyze ideas and concepts which are discussed in architecture discourse in the contemporary architectural world. The study-unit aims to encourage students to develop their own architectural philosophy. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - identify the main trends of thought in architectural theory post Second World War; - understand the discourse of contemporary architectural discourse. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - critically analyses contemporary architectural concepts; - present a critical assessment of a contemporary architect, in the light of contemporary thought.
