DESCRIPTION The dissertation - portfolio is the main output of the Master in Fine Arts in an area of study which benefits from a project-based approach, including disciplines from fine arts, visual arts, architecture, or conservation, that falls within the academic responsibility of the Faculty for the Built Environment. Research will be undertaken primarily by studio-based or practice-based work. The detailed programme will vary depending on the theme of research, but will normally include a portfolio of original studio-based or practice-based or project-based work, as exhibited in a portfolio, or publication, and a written dissertation. The weighting between dissertation and portfolio may be varied by the Board, depending on the theme of research, with a minimum of 20% assigned to the dissertation.

Study-unit Aims:

The aim of the dissertation - portfolio is to highlight the candidate’s reflective practice at Master level. It should clearly show the integral relationship between concept, process and realisation. The text should clearly demonstrate the historical, theoretical, critical and analytical research conducted by the student in relation to the body of work undertaken, and its documentation.

The candidate will need to show evidence that a sound and systematic understanding of the subject of research has been acquired, and to show a critical awareness of current problems and/or new insights relating to the selected field of study. The candidate must demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of techniques applicable to their own research, particularly but not limited to the ones used in the research.
