DESCRIPTION The purpose of this study-unit is to explore the world of alternative investments such as hedge funds, commodities, real estate and private equity. The study unit aims to add a new dimension to the construction and management of traditional investment portfolios, such as bonds and equities, by focusing on the workings of the industries classified under alternative investments, examine their incentives and subsequent transactions and present them in detail within an academic and practical framework.

Study-Unit Aims:

The aim is to broaden and provide the student's in depth understanding of the alternative investments industry. The study unit aims at enabling students to integrate the use of alternative investments as part of an overall investment strategy and portfolio. The study unit aims at equipping students with the latest investment techniques and tools used by hedge fund, Private Equity, Real Estate, Commodities, Art Finance, Environment Investments, Energy markets, Islamic finance and structured products.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Describe and explain alternative investment products;
- Describe and explain the rationale for using alternative investment products;
- Explain which type of investors are the most suited for using alternative investment products;
- Describe and explain the different alternative investment strategies and how these are structured;
- List, describe and explain the most common investments strategies used in alternative investment products space.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Select, construct and apply alternative investment strategies;
- Identify and analyse (both conceptually and practically) the risk and return characteristics of alternative investment vehicles and strategies.
