DESCRIPTION For non-historians, archival research may seem like a standardized method of inquiry that is carried out mainly in libraries and special collections rooms.

The aim of this study-unit is to provide participants with an understanding of how archives developed and function. This study-unit will also define the role of the archivist, differentiate between the different types of manuscripts deposited in an archive, and provide participants with a sound understanding of the collections held in local archives, namely, The National Library, The National Archives, The Notarial Archives, and The Archives of the Mdina Cathedral.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit will provide participants with an understanding of how archives developed and function. It will also serve to introduce participants to the various archives and prepare them to carry out individual research from primary sources.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate understanding of how archives developed and function;
- Demonstrate sound knowledge of the collections held in the local archives;
- Identify which archival sources may be consulted to address specific research issues;

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Carry out independent research in libraries and archives;
- Assist in any job concerning the classification and indexing of archival material in Malta such as the National Library, the National Archives, the Notarial Archives, the Archives of the Mdina Cathedral and private archives.
