DESCRIPTION The dissertation study-unit provides each registered student with an opportunity to identify and investigate a research topic, considered by the board of the International Institute for Baroque Studies to be a suitable area of research that falls within the expertise of an allocated supervisor. The dissertation enables students to expand on the themes explored during the taught components of the course, critically assess relevant literature and sources, and write a dissertation in accordance with the Institute guidelines. Following the submission of the dissertation, a viva-voce examination will be held.

Study-unit Aims:

- To expand and explore a specific area of study relevant to the Baroque age.
- To develop skills pertaining to dissertation preparation and presentation.
- To develop skills in the research, augmentation, evaluation, and presentation in a research area.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate acquired expertise in an area of study related to the Baroque age;
- Conduct in-depth research, evaluate sources, expound ideas and present them in a dissertation.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Find and critically assess relevant literature;
- Analyze and objectively present the results of their research;
- Write a dissertation.

ADDITIONAL NOTES **September Assessment Session: Students who fail to obtain an overall pass mark will be re-examined in the Dissertation. However, the resit availability for the Oral Examination is at the discretion of the Board of Examiners.
