DESCRIPTION The dissertation study-unit provides each registered student with an opportunity to independently identify and investigate a research topic, considered by the Board of Studies to be a suitable area of research that falls within the expertise of the allocated supervisor. The dissertation study-unit enables students to apply what they have learnt from the study-unit on Research Methods (ICT5901) to a research topic to develop a hypothesis, critically assess relevant literature, evaluate or test the hypothesis using a suitable approach, and present the findings by writing a dissertation in accordance with Faculty guidelines.

Study-Unit Aims:

1. To instil scientific rigour in the endeavour to propose improvement in an area of specialisation;
2. To develop skills pertaining to dissertation preparation and presentation methodology;
3. To develop skills in the research, augmentation, evaluation, presentation, defence and scientific procedure in a research area.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to demonstrate acquired expertise, define hypothesis, define originality, expound ideas and defend them through evaluation and orally.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
1. Give a motivation and rationale for performing research;
2. Find and critically assess relevant literature;
3. Describe and justify a research methodology;
4. Build a computational model to evaluate their hypothesis;
5. Assess different evaluation approaches relevant to the domain;
6. Analyse and objectively present the results of the evaluation;
7. Draw conclusions about the relevance and significance of their research;
8. Write a scientific dissertation.

ADDITIONAL NOTES **September Assessment Session: Students who fail to obtain an overall pass mark will be re-examined in the Dissertation. However, the resit availability for the Presentation and Oral Examination is at the discretion of the Board of Examiners.
