Study-Unit Description

CODE CGS5990

TITLE Dissertation

UM LEVEL 05 - Postgraduate Modular Diploma or Degree Course

MQF LEVEL 7

ECTS CREDITS 30

DEPARTMENT Cognitive Science

DESCRIPTION The Dissertation will be the product of a research project which is motivated by current theoretical and empirical work in the field of Cognitive Science. A research proposal will be submitted by each student and a purposely set up dissertation committee will evaluate each proposal with regards to relevance, scope and research potential. A tutor with expertise in the proposed area of research will be assigned to each student. Through the research process leading up to the writing of the dissertation, the researcher is expected to investigate a research question and test related hypotheses by empirical methods.

The planning, design, execution and writing up of the research work and findings should demonstrate that the student is capable of carrying out original and advanced research in the field of Cognitive Science at levels expected for publication in peer reviewed journals.

Study-unit Aims:

- To apply and articulate research methodologies underpinning research in the field of Cognitive Science.
- To facilitate innovative work at Masters level which draws on the various disciplines feeding into Cognitive Science and achieve a synthesis of the theoretical, analytical, empirical and experimental natures of these disciplines.
- To demonstrate technical and academic accomplishment through dissemination of original and relevant findings which contribute to ongoing research and debate in the relevant areas of research.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Handle the practicalities of research, goal setting, planning, team-working, using resources, presentation skills, and meeting requirements of good practice.
- Apply the techniques for advancing knowledge and understanding, such as identifying relevant areas of research, articulating an original and realistic research question, review relevant literature, identifying the lines of debate and engaging critically with peer researchers.
- Develop a critical framework in which to review ongoing research, and design improved or alternative research instruments and strategies to contribute further knowledge on the chosen area of research.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Apply and articulate research methodologies underpinning an advanced and original research project which contributes to knowledge in the field of Cognitive Science.
- Create a research document appropriate for the dissemination of finding resulting from empirical research.
- Collaborate with researchers in the field of cognitive science and to engage with and participate in the dissemination and sharing of knowledge resulting from such collaborative research and interaction.
