DESCRIPTION The placement study-unit is a key learning experience, allowing students to apply theoretical knowledge in a professional setting, and developing a sense of what it will be like to work as a chemist. In this study-unit, students will spend a period of time on a placement in a setting related to chemistry. The placement may be in an industrial, academic, research or regulatory setting, and may be performed locally or abroad.

Study-Unit Aims:

The objective of this study-unit is to provide students with the opportunity to:
- Experience the environment of a real workplace and identify how needs are identified and resources are acquired, allocated and used for the purpose of achieving organisational objectives.
- Organise themselves so that they can receive, quickly understand and carry out instructions to the satisfaction of their superiors as a means of developing towards the completion of more responsible work.
- Develop the interpersonal skills required to enable them to work efficiently as a member of a team trying to achieve organisational goals.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Exhibit technical chemical skills associated with the nature of work as a chemist;
- Identify, analyse and discuss how theoretical concepts in chemistry are adapted and applied to suit practical workplace requirements;
- Translate principles of good laboratory practices into the day-to-day activities of a chemist in a workplace setting.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Work effectively in an unfamiliar setting;
- Use academic knowledge in a practical environment;
- Work towards specific goals and objectives;
- Plan and manage tasks;
- Work within timescales appropriate to the workplace setting;
- Interact as a team member and communicate effectively with co-workers, both in a group and on an individual basis;
- Keep a laboratory notebook and report work carried out, both at the bench and in a formal report.
