TITLE Cultural Tourism in China

DESCRIPTION China is the world's fourth largest country for inbound tourism. It is a country full of travel resources, such as spectacular natural scenes, brilliant mountains and rivers, and many places of interest with cultural meanings, which attract many travelers from different countries. The scope of this course is to provide a general overview of Chinese cultural tourism. The selected topics include: The Great Wall, a symbol of the Chinese nation, is also a prime example of cultural sites that have become major tourist attractions; The Shaolin Temple in Henan Province, the birthplace of Chinese Zen Buddhism and famous for its Shaolin Kung Fu martial arts; Grottoes filled with precious murals and sculptures are concentrated along the ancient Silk Road in Gansu Province. The best known are the Mogao Caves, a "treasure house of oriental art", and also the Leshan Giant Buddha of Sichuan Province; South of the Yangtze River, Suzhou and Hangzhou, long known as "paradise on earth", are crisscrossed with rivers, lakes, bridges, fields and villages, as beautiful as paintings.

Study-unit Aims

1. To arouse the students’ curiosity and interest in Chinese cultural tourism.
2. To make the students know some of the most important cultural sites.
3. To introduce the students to some basic cultural tourism terms in Chinese.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. understand how China manages it cultural tourism sector.
2. have a grasp of the most important technical terms used in Chinese cultural tourism.

2. Skills (including transferable [generic] skills): By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. appreciate the basic aspects of Chinese cultural tourism and the latter's management.
2. compare Chinese cultural tourism with other counties’ cultural tourism, especially that of Malta.
