DESCRIPTION This study-unit is suitable for applicants who have no prior knowledge of the Chinese language. It is designed for beginners to develop new language skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing as it relates to everyday life situations. Pinyin as a pronunciation tool will be taught during the class. The Chinese sentence structure, grammar and commonly used Chinese Characters (the simplified Chinese characters) will be introduced in the course.

Study-unit Aims:

1. To familiarise students with the Chinese phonetic system (initials, finals and tones) with satisfactory pronunciation.
2. To provide students with the practical knowledge and skills to recognise and reproduce a number of Chinese character (around 400 individual Chinese characters).
3. To introduce basic grammar structures and syntax in modern Chinese.
4. To enable students to understand modern Chinese related to topics of everyday life.
5. To provide students with the essential skills to read, comprehend and also write very short passages in elementary Chinese.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1) understand and properly use the Chinese phonetic system;
2) recognise and write up to 400 individual Chinese characters;
3) use approximately 600 Chinese words and frequently used phrases;
4) master the basic Chinese grammar structures and simple syntax;
5) read, understand and speak Chinese to the level of HSK 1 (equivalent to A1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1) make a close reading of texts;
2) develop a greater attention to detail;
3) learn to dialogue better;
4) appreciate better other cultures.
