TITLE Twentieth-Century Chinese History

UM LEVEL 01 - Year 1 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 5

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Middle Eastern and Asian Languages and Cultures

DESCRIPTION This study-unit offers students an introduction to the major events and discourses in China from the latter half of the nineteenth century until the beginning of the new millenium. The matter of sovereignty under the threat of foreign influence underpinned political issues throughout this era, which is why it is often referred to as China's "long twentieth century." Although previous knowledge of Chinese history is useful, it is not mandatory in order to follow the lectures and discussions in this study-unit. Students are expected to discuss weekly readings involving the ways that Chinese identity was shaped and impacted by the political ideologies, cultural movements, wars, and economic changes that occurred throughout the 1900s.

Study-Unit Aims:

- Introduce students to the major events and concurrent discourses that shaped China's shift from dynastic empire to communist nation-state;
- Contextualize the meaning of Chinese identity in relation to modernization, especially in terms of political and cultural movements;
- Ground students with a foundational knowledge of key historical figures (i.e. Sun Yat-sen, Chiang Kai-shek, Mao Zedong, Deng Xiaoping, etc.) along with their influential ideas and achievements.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Identify and discuss the significance of critical events and ideas from the twentieth-century in China;
- Describe the various layers of Chinese identity;
- Identify the major political discourses in the Sinosphere and to analyze how they have changed over the last century.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Examine the larger meaning of Chinese identity through socio-historical frameworks, paying close attention to the relationship between the Chinese state(s) and foreign powers;
- Read and write critically about their understanding of the political, social, and cultural movements that have transformed China in the last century.
