| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit enables students to practice their previously acquired Chinese grammar and vocabularyin new and practical ways. Students must have successfully completed Chinese 1, 2, and 3, or equivalent. In this course, students will compose a range of written pieces in Chinese reflecting different genres, styles, and narrative forms. Study-Unit Aims: - Introduce students to real-world writing and methods of composition found outside of their language textbooks; - Provide a methodical breakdown of authors’ style and narrative practice within the context of Chinese-language acquisition; - Initiate learners into the standard practices of Chinese writing, especially in terms of syntax, composition, punctuation, and style. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Identify and describe the form, function, and qualitative components of Chinese writing; - Recognize and imitate the style and form of well-known Chinese writers; - Appreciate the stylistic and compositional features of Chinese writing as well as their differences from writing in other language traditions, such as English and Maltese. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Write and compose long-form narratives in Chinese using real-world examples as models; - Contribute and provide feedback and support for classmates’ writing, and to actively take on board constructive criticism from others in their own writing; - Edit and revise their own creative works and writing practices based on class discussions, feedback, and further reading. Main Text/s and any supplementary readings: - LIU, YUAN, EXPERIENCE CHINESE: WRITING TEXTBOOK, ELEMENTARY LEVEL, BEIJING, EDUCATION PRESS, 2007. - DENG, ENMING, PRACTICAL CHINESE: READING AND WRITING, BEIJING, BEIJING LANGUAGE & CULTURE UNIVERSITY PRESS, 2008. These books can be found either at the University library or at the Confucius Institute library. Further recommended reading and handouts will be given in class. |
