DESCRIPTION Chinese language is considered "different" from either Semitic languages, such as Maltese, or Indo-European languages, such as English, to some extent including its language system and the writing system. This study-unit introduces the general picture of the current situation of the Chinese language and the variety of the Chinese language from a linguistic perspective. It aims to provide the student with knowledge of the main fields of Chinese Linguistics, including phonology, morphology and word classes with a focus on Mandarin Chinese, as well as features of the writing system.

Study-unit Aims:

1. Provide students with a general knowledge of the Chinese writing systems, including Chinese characters, Romanization of Chinese and Chinese punctuation;
2. Expose students to fundamental questions in Chinese phonology, word class and morphology;
3. Familiarize students with the Mandarin pronunciation system from a linguistic perspective.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. Analyze characters and their various components;
2. Critically discuss the main ideas in Chinese phonology, word class and morphology.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. Compare the essential differences between Chinese and other languages concerning phonology, word class and morphology;
2. Formulate their own argument on basic topics of Chinese phonology, word class and morphology;
3. Develop critical sensibility in linguistic matters.
